CHARITY SHRINES
and workshops
This event is for love, not for profit. How we remember a loved one is unique to each of us and we hope our shrines reflect this. Many will be generic, others have specific themes including Baby Loss Awareness, pets, a shrine dedicated to Children of Peace, others dedicated to those lost to cancer. For 2025 / 2026 we are adding two new shrines around the theme of lost loved ones who are still living including Alzheimers. We are also offering pre-exhibition workshops for people affected by Cancer and young people affected by violent crime. If you know someone who would benefit from processing their experiences in this way please contact us info@projectaltar.com
We believe it's important for different communities to come together and celebrate life and legacy of our lost loved ones. Project Altar is a multi-award winning programme of immersive, publically created art events , reflecting on the life experiences that unite us. In 2024 we honoured 700 lives creating, impacting not just the 2500 visitors who attended, but also for those that took part in our many creative workshops. This included hundreds of primary school children and the young people & families we worked with through partner charities.
The exhibition sold out in only 7 days. And we have just won FOUR CreativePool awards for Rebel, Self-initiated and most importantly Social Good.
Applications are now open for artists, sponsors, charity workshops and our doors are always open to celebrate the lives and stories of your loved ones. See more from last years event in the reel below or Get in touch here.
A week to remember
Altar is a love letter to lost loved ones, an exploration of the space between life and death. Collecting 1,000's of lives to pay tribute to, our curated artists integrate their photos into an illuminated trail of secular shrines. The art trail is set against a backdrop of nature and beautiful architecture with spaces for visitors to print photos, write messages and craft their own memorials.
Whatever you believe in, whether you were born 1000 years ago or today, we have more in common than divides us. This isn't about death. It's about celebrating life, love, joy and acknowledging loss - human experiences that unite us. Altar aims to provide space for people of all backgrounds and faiths to come together to remember the people who shaped us. Whether its your grandma, your partner, your first pet or even a famous campaigner, all are welcome. Come and celebrate their legacy.
We do this for love not profit. Your contribution will allow us to create impact and work with partner charities. This year we are running a series of pre-event workshops for young people processing loss, youth violence, those affected by cancer and also for families who want to create memory boxes for loved ones with dementia.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Sadly, due to reasons beyond our control we are unable to run the event at Abney Park in 2025. We continue to offer workshops throughout the year and will be back for the annual event in 2026. Please join the waiting list and we will make sure you are the first to hear of any updates.
